Bree and I used to live in a loft apartment. At night, our dog, Meggie (R.I.P.) used to sleep on the lower level. Well, during the winter it would get quite cold downstairs while the loft would stay warm. So, I decided to start putting a heated blanket in her doggie bed. The only problem was that the blanket would shut off after about an hour. So, I started doing research to figure out how to override the timer on the electric blanket. Well, Google searches presented me with a myriad of information which mainly consisted of warnings about not attempting the exact procedure I was attempting to complete. The rest of the information provided was a cluster of schematics and pictures that I wasn’t familiar with deciphering. I was inundated with an excess of microchips, motherboards, and resistors that I didn’t have any experience with handling. Yet, after multiple hours and lots of reading, I realized that the timer on the electric blanket was controlled by a simple tiny resistor no bigger than the tip of a Bic pen. All I had to do was remove the resistor and the blanket would no longer shut off after the given time period. Thanks to my father, I had some basic experience soldering, and after locating the transistor on the schematic it didn’t take more than a minute to remove it. After plugging in the blanket for a test, sure enough the blanket stayed warm until I shut it off manually. Success! Now, I must give a disclaimer: I do not endorse, support, or encourage you to do what I have just described! 

How in the world does this relate to our passage? It relates because oftentimes the Bible can seem like a complicated schematic. Full of jargon, figurative language, and symbolism we simply aren’t familiar with. Yet, with some time, research, and rereading, we can begin to grasp the depths of the text in front of us. This book is not simply a collection of writings, but a history of our faith. A map of God’s ultimate plan. A receipt of His promises. I encourage you to step out of our text and seek out scholars and spiritually sound researchers who have dedicated their lives to understanding the true meaning of the text that guides our life. Seek to understand further than the words on the page. Seek to understand the hand and heart of those who wrote them.
