Scripture

Welcome to Nehemiah! This book was written alongside Ezra to give us a glimpse into the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Ezra shares the rebuilding of the temple and Nehemiah shares the rebuilding of the city.

One of my favorite themes streaming through both Ezra and Nehemiah is their complete reliance on prayer and the power of God. Fourteen times in the book of Nehemiah, he turns to prayer, trusting God to move in his situation. When his brother gives him a bad report about the destruction of Jerusalem, Nehemiah immediately turns to prayer and fasting. Both he and Ezra continue this practice throughout their ministry, leaving behind a pedigree of city and culture transformation.

Our distractions might not be the threat of death, destruction, or arrest. However, as social media, cell phones, smart watches, smart glasses and more begin to rob our focus, it can become easier and easier to let everything but prayer be the central trust and influence in our lives.

I remember shortly after our first child was born we noticed she had a rash and stuffy nose. Thanks to a quick google search we had unsuccessfully diagnosed her with the West Nile virus, rushing her to urgent care. I remember the fear and anxiety we created in our home, only to find out it was a food dye allergy. I remember thinking, “Did I seriously trust Google?”

Ezra and Nehemiah rebuilt a city, established a temple, and restored a nation to worship by starting with prayer. Imagine what God could do through us if we approached our lives the same way.
