Scripture
The eating habits of my 2 year old son are a hot mess. Google search is always telling me I’m feeding him the wrong thing and he should be drinking less milk by now. But the truth is, some days all he wants is milk! So instead of starving him, I give him more milk! Now, every kid is different and logically I know he’s going to grow out of it and be just fine, but I am still noticeably excited when he wants chicken nuggets and green beans! When he wants “real” food, I encourage him with a little cheer and hope the trend continues. After all, if he only wants milk from a bottle when he’s 15, something has gone seriously wrong!
In the same way, our faith should naturally grow and mature as we walk through life with Jesus. If we are still in the same position spiritually as we were when we were born again, something is wrong. Paul didn’t have children of his own but he “gets me,” when he compares the church’s faith to the poor eating habits of a developing child.
Hebrews 5:11-14 says, “We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
Just like a baby learns to live on solid food, we must learn from God’s word and develop a more mature faith as we seek righteousness. Over time, our sanctification ought to reflect a new diet, so that we can move past “elementary truths” and on to deeper understanding. I know that some days we’ll struggle to move forward, but I believe God celebrates even the “baby steps” toward spiritual maturity.

SUBMIT TO GOD
God, lead me to a closer and more intimate relationship with you. You are my one true blessing. You have been with me through ups and downs. Don’t let me make it about something else. It’s about you, God. In Jesus Name, Amen.
