Scripture
Like many stereotypical Christian kids, I grew up on Veggie Tales! If you didn’t have the pleasure, let me catch you up. Veggie Tales is a Christian cartoon series that brings bible stories to life….through vegetables. Yes, you read that right 🙂
Some of the interpretations are a bit outlandish. For example, I remember the Israelites having “slushies” thrown down at them as they marched around the walls of Jericho. Not sure “slushies” were around back then but nonetheless, it got me interested in God’s word as a young Christian!
My favorite take away from the hours I spent glued to the wacky series is the shortening of three very difficult names you’ll recognize from today’s reading. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego became a much more familiar “Rack, Shack, and Benny!” Genius move Veggie Tales. It might be difficult to remember the names of these fellas, but their story is so incredible, it will never be forgotten.
“Rack, Shack, and Benny” are tested in a way we will likely never understand. When they’re forced to worship an idol, they defy their King and are sentenced to death by fire! They would rather die than be found on their knees before another God.
After their step of obedience, their miracle happens. When they’re thrown into the fire, God shows up and keeps them from any harm. The King who pronounced their judgment literally sees a figure in the fire with them and orders them removed! Not only does God do a miracle in saving Rack, Shack and Benny, but this miracle changes the heart of a murderous King! He repents and turns to God.
When I hear this story, I find something that is often overlooked; obedience. I think we get caught up in the “defying people we disagree with” and forget what God is actually calling us to do. He wants to do miracles in our lives, but sometimes He’s waiting on us to follow through with what He’s called us to do already. Are we willing to step into His calling even if it leads us into a challenge? Do we make excuses for our disobedience to avoid discomfort? Who knows what God can do on the other side of our submission to His word. I’d like to find out!
Prayer
HONOR GOD
Matthew 6:9-10, “This, then, is how you should pray:“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…”
In your own words, take a few moments and honor God. Reflect on the price He paid to have a relationship with you, and His love for you.
ASK GOD
Matthew 6:11 Give us today our daily bread.
Picture God extending His hands towards you. What are you concerned about that needs to be placed in His hands? What is the “bread” you need from Him? Ask Him.
SUBMIT TO GOD
Matthew 6:12-13 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Imagine yourself entering a dark room, with a person in front of you, holding a flashlight, leading you. That’s what God does. As He leads you, tell Him how you desire to follow Him.
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, help me to cling to your promises for they are the realest thing I have. They are true and everlasting. Do not allow me to give up your promises for simple earthly pleasures or moments of weakness. Keep me from the temptations of the enemy and may your Holy Spirit guide me in my walk each and everyday. In Jesus Name, Amen.
