Scripture
So, what happens when you first read the Song of Solomon? I must be honest with you. When I first read this, I wondered how in the world this guy had so many relationships! Can you really compare a woman to pomegranates or compare parts of her body to gazelles and expect her to feel loved? We have all heard cheesy song lyrics or written some cheesy poem ourselves. Pomegranates???? So, this time while reading it, I started thinking the same thing. I had to make myself keep reading when I finally found something different. It’s not the comparisons or metaphors that really matter. The difference here is that they are completely enamored with each other. There are no statements of love based on how the other person made them feel….it was focused on the other person. When he talks of the woman—it’s all about her. How beautiful she is, how wonderful, how delightful, etc. When she talks of him it’s about his character, his strength, etc. In other words, the love they feel is centered on each other. All too often today we build our expressions of love based on how a person makes us feel. I know that when we are with someone we love, we do feel good. We love the feeling of being near them. The truth, however, is that love isn’t based on how we feel. God loves us but her certainly doesn’t always focus on how we make Him feel! There are times when the things I do, the way I behave, and the thoughts I think certainly do not encourage anyone to want to be around me! However, love is not based on feelings. And yes, the love in this passage is a different relational love. The truth remains, though, that love is not about how a person feels. It’s about the one you love. Whether I understand all the metaphors or not, it’s very clear that they hold each other in a very high regard. Again, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend telling the love of your life that their mouth is a scarlet thread…. but I would say that when we hold someone in such high regard that we focus on them and not how they make us feel about ourselves, we are on the right track.
