Scripture

Proverbs 24:16 for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.

This verse never made sense to me. What makes sense is that if the righteous fall seven times, then he or she shall no longer be righteous. They shall be wicked. How can you maintain the title of righteous when you keep falling. I understand if you fall a couple of times, but seven. It seems like a high number. The wicked in this verse does not fall but stumble. According to google, stumble means: almost falling. How is it that the one who falls consistently is righteous, but the one who momentarily loses its balance but does not fall is given the title of wicked? The main difference lies in the phrase in the middle: they rise again.

Sometimes life will throw itself at us with full force and despite our best efforts, we fall. Yet we are able to rise again by the grace of God. We don’t stay down and give up. We rise again. We choose to strengthen ourselves in our relationship with Jesus so that when calamity strikes, we don’t even stumble. The problem with the wicked is that they never rise, they always stand on shaky ground. The wicked never knows where he or she is in relation to God, so anything will make them stumble. They have not built their life on the firm foundation that is Jesus Christ. Righteousness is not based on your ability to not fall, but on your surrender to let God pull you up after.

Today, don’t let yourself not know where you stand in relation to God. Seek Him with all your strength and heart. Find him in your time alone. Don’t just check a box on your to-do list, but have an encounter with Him. He does not blame you for your falls, but he justifies you through His sacrifice. You are worthy of meeting God today. Do not let your guilt from past mistakes keep you away from His presence. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Go boldly and unapologetically to His throne of grace in your moment of deepest need.
