Scripture

How many of you can sing this song in your head as you read these lyrics?…

It’s a big big house

With lots and lots of room

A big big table

With lots and lots of food

A big big yard

Where we can play football

A big big house

It’s my Father’s house”

If you’re not hearing the melody, do yourself a favor and listen to “Big House” by Audio Adrenaline 🙂 It’s a classic Christian tune released in 1993. So obviously, it’s incredible.

I’m a ’90s kid so this song was playing on my boombox pretty regularly, but I’ll be honest, there’s one lyric that always bothered me. Let’s just say, I’ve always been pretty far from “athletically inclined.” When I first heard this song, I was young and impressionable and thought “why would I want to spend time playing football in my Father’s house?” Well, turns out that particular line isn’t entirely biblical but I appreciate the creative license anyway!

Despite the risk I might have to play some football, the house of my Father is absolutely the place I want to be! At His altar, in His presence, with His glory all around. There is truly nothing like it. As our reading today says “ For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” – Psalm 84:10

The best part is, His altar is no longer a physical place I need to travel to in order to meet with Him! He dwells within me and my heart has become the throne He rests upon. I am so much more than a doorkeeper, I am the temple of His presence! When I recognize this role, I am blessed beyond belief by His favor and His goodness that rests within me.

As the temple, I am now the house of my Father and I carry Him with me! Maybe there’s no football being played, but there are praises being sung. Psalm 84:4 says “Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house;  they are ever praising you.”
