Scripture
When I was younger I had a difficult time asking questions to figures of authority. It may have a little to do with how I was raised-you don’t question an adult or an authority figure. You don’t need to know the why in every circumstance. I wouldn’t dare question the authority of my parents at a younger age. I remember being punished regularly for falling short in school. Maybe I didn’t take my grades seriously enough so I’d spend weeks being punished from video games or tv until I could show that my grades had improved. Not once did I question the punishment. I simply accepted it and went on about my business trying to improve.
My circumstance was a bit different from Job’s in two ways. Number one I knew there was a good reason for my punishment and number two I would never question the authority of my parents. Job was a bit different. The Bible says that Job had lived a blameless life and was “a man of complete integrity.” He had been blessed by God in all aspects of his life up to this point, so when things fall apart he wants to go to the source for an explanation. In Job chapter 13 he questions God about what he has done to be put in this place. What sin had he committed that God had removed his hand from his life?
It’s in Jobs’ questioning that we can all learn a lesson. God is compassionate and I believe wants us to seek answers. If I apply my thought process from earlier in life to God I would never ask God why. I would simply deal with the circumstances and move on. God is not our parents. While he has absolute authority over us he wants us to draw closer to him and many times this comes in our darkest moments. Even in the moments where we question his direction or guidance in our lives. His answer won’t always be the one we want or even make sense in the moment of our greatest suffering, but our willingness to go before him will draw us closer to him and in the end bring glory to himself. Don’t be afraid to ask God why. It is our hearts turning to him during these tough times that he wants most!
