Worship
Scripture
I distinctly remember the first time I noticed someone raise their hands during worship. I thought it was embarrassing, I thought it was a bit odd and the truth is, I thought singing songs was just a fun activity we did together! “Worship” wasn’t even a thought in my mind.
Thankfully, I’m no longer 8 years old and I’ve come to understand the purpose and calling behind our “worship” in the congregation and outside the congregation. I hope this understanding will only grow and mature. It’s one of those situations where I say “I wish I’d known sooner.” I wish I’d been taught what worship was, even as an 8 year old. If you’ve ever wondered why we make music in church, the following verse should answer your question.
2 Chronicles 5:13-14 says, “and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the Lord,
“For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever,” the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.”
Worship is a vehicle for God’s presence! The word says He is enthroned in our praises! Psalm 22:3 tells us he is “ holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.”
Worship is a catalyst for God’s movement in our life. Whether you consider yourself a “musician” or a “singer” matters very little to Him. Each one of us is a “worshiper!” We are all called to worship because God knows what it does for our soul. When we humble ourselves, raise a song, praise the Lord and sing lyrics filled with truth, we invite Him to sit on His rightful throne in our life!
Music can be intimidating and cause our pride to well up inside. We may feel vulnerable, judged, weak, dramatic or unworthy to make music to the Lord. But if we let our flesh get in the way, we may miss out on the experiences we read about in scripture. Worship leads to God’s presence and God’s presence changes lives. May we never tire of praising His name!
