Scripture
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 is one of the 10 or 20 verses I can recall as it is written without having to look it up. It’s a deep verse that contains the message of the gospel in one sentence. I like one liners and this is definitely a Bible one liner. It also became a verse that helped me understand more about why bad things can happen to good people. That answer is simple-there is no one good or without sin, even the good among us are tainted to the core.
The quicker we can understand and accept this the more powerful Romans 6:23 becomes in our own lives. While the cost of sin is ultimately death we do have another option that will bring resolution to the story-Jesus. Even still we have to continue to live in a fallen world with sin and death and must understand that this is a part of the way the fallen world works. It’s actually scientific: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
David was considered to be a man after God’s own heart, but in 2 Samuel 12 we find that even a king was subject to the consequences of his actions. While God made a way for David to be forgiven and move forward, his actions caused a chain of events that would cost not just David but others around him. 2 Samuel 12:13-14 clearly outlines the price David had to pay: “Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have made enemies of the Lord show utter contempt, the son born to you will die.”
Reading on, we find that the Lord does not spare David’s son, but he would have another son with Bathsheba that would be named Solomon who would be considered one of the wisest human beings to ever live. He would become King of Israel and be responsible for writing the book of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. David’s ability to recognize and repent of his sin is where we should learn our own lesson. Although we must still pay the price for our actions, there is redemption found in Jesus. We can understand that the wages of our sin IS death but God has made a way and for that we should all rejoice.
