I’m always excited to visit people’s homes. When I walk into a home for the first time, I observe the details of the life being lived in that space. I get a picture that represents the people who dwell there. Maybe the homeowner is a bachelor with sparse furniture but an incredible gaming system. Maybe they are a mom with a thousand tiny shoes strewn across the floor and a dozen baby bottles drying next to their kitchen sink. Maybe they are a retired couple with family heirlooms on the wall and pictures of their grandchildren over the fireplace. Each home is unique and I love to discover more about the people living there through what they keep near.
Solomon takes on a massive project when he builds a dwelling place for God. 1 Kings reads like an architecture textbook at times but the message of glory and honor is only emphasized in the details. It’s clear that Solomon wanted this “home” to represent the majesty and sovereignty of the God who would fill the space. He was communicating visually to the people who stepped inside, just how worthy their God was.
God no longer dwells in a single place within a literal temple. We have become the dwelling place of His Spirit. Reading today’s passages describing the preparation and beauty of the temple inspires me to honor God through the temple of my body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
I wonder if God, while dwelling within me, feels honored the same way he did in Solomon’s temple. Do I prepare a fitting throne for Him and honor Him with the way that I live my life? If He deserved Solomon’s temple and so much more, how much does He deserve in my life?
