Scripture

We all have situations that are out of our control. Four years ago, I moved to the United States as a student. Now I am going through a process with the government that will determine if I am able to stay or if I have to go back to my home country. A situation like this is extremely frustrating. There are many limitations that I have to live under, plus it’s hard to live with uncertainty two steps ahead. We’ve all been in a situation like this; where we had little to no control of our desired outcome. It’s moments like these that remind me of the Sabbath.

I often think about what the purpose of the Sabbath was. God rested on the seventh day and it was not because He was so fatigued after creating the universe, He needed a little rest. God then placed the Sabbath in the ten commandments as part of the covenant He made with His people. Not just that, but it is continuously echoed all throughout Scripture. In the passages we read today, we see a constant; they were allowed work for six days but they had to rest the seventh. What was the purpose of this?

As I continue to grow in my faith and my responsibilities, I have now come to believe that the purpose of the Sabbath is that we may come to the realization that God is in control. Not us. Let’s be honest, we all have so many things to do that seven days is not enough. There’s a reason why God gave the Sabbath right after the Israelites were taken out of exploitative captivity. The Sabbath is for rest and for trust that God will take care of us regardless of the circumstance. Sabbath is about aligning our Spirit’s to God. It’s about resting our bodies and nourishing our spirits.

How do we practice the Sabbath today? We do it by resting in the Lord. By acknowledging that those situations that are out of our control, aren’t out of His. By setting apart a day of the week and diving deeper into relationship with Him. Searching Him more through scripture, worship and prayer.
