Scripture

I have been known to struggle with portion control. There was a time in my life when my metabolism was much higher. I could eat 12-15 slices of pizza without batting an eye. I could put down a dozen doughnuts and a large glass of whole milk without the slightest stomach ache. The craziest thing of all was I wouldn’t gain weight. I never felt sick to my stomach. I developed the habit of eating whatever I wanted without any of the negative consequences.

Needless to say things have changed. I still try to eat more pizza and doughnuts than I should but I now suffer the consequences. I can’t look at a doughnut without gaining 5 pounds. The pizza I used to regularly put down now gives me heartburn and indigestion. I now gain weight quite easily and losing weight is a struggle. These negative consequences are signs. Signs that my body is telling me, “you can’t do this anymore”. You have to slow down.” Nearly every time I overdo it, my body lets me know about it, yet I still struggle with remembering the last time I felt so sick when that same platter of pizza was passed in front of me. I struggle to remember the way it makes me feel after I partake in a half dozen doughnuts.

In Deuteronomy Ch. 4 the Israelites are given a stern warning to remember the things that God had done as they were on the verge of crossing over into the promised land. God had brought them out of Egypt and delivered them time and time again. He had given their enemies over to them and continued to do great things. The words of the Lord were to never forget. Deuteronomy chapter 4:9 says, “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.”

God knew the Israelites would be prone to forget, just as I am prone to forget what poor food choices do to my body. The temptations of this world are great and will always be there. Today, let us remember the things God has done in our own lives so that we may walk in his will and honor him by living according to his word.
